PrimaLoft®, also known as the down Alternative?, is a unique super-soft hydrophobic microfibre which mimics the warmth, lightweight and softness of down yet, unlike down, is water-repellent.
How was PrimaLoft® developed?
PrimaLoft®, which is manufactured by US-based Albany International, was created in response to a US army request for an alternative to down: they needed a product which was quick drying and maintained high warmth even when wet.
The manufacturers studied the physical and thermal properties of down and developed a product comprising millions of man-made, soft microfibres which would sit together much like down fibres. The lightweight and incredibly soft PrimaLoft® insulation is created by millions of tiny air spaces suspended in a microfibre mesh. These air spaces are so fine that water drops bead on the surface. Even when forced into the PrimaLoft® core, water is repelled and not absorbed by the patented microfibre composition, so PrimaLoft® keeps you warm even when wet.
PrimaLoft® is patented and is the industry standard against which other synthetic and natural insulations are measured.
